And to think he'd spent all that time shining his pads...

Second One Day International, Trent Bridge

England 85 beat South Africa 83 by ten wickets

KP's winning streak as England captain continues as England take a 2-0 lead in the One Day series with a commanding ten wicket win over South Africa.

It was clearly going to take Paul a while to get back in to the swing of things...

Ravi Bopara is the man who has made way as Paul Collingwood returns to the England one-day side, showing that new skipper Kevin Pietersen is not a man you'll find uttering the phrase "if it's not broke, don't fix it". Despite a convinving one-day win over South Africa in the first game at Headingley, KP has recalled his old mucker following his four match ban. Albie Morkel returns for the visitors at Trent Bridge, in place of Vernon Philander.

England: Ian Bell, Matt Prior (wk), Owais Shah, Kevin Pietersen (capt), Andrew Flintoff, Paul Collingwood, Samit Patel, Luke Wright, Stuart Broad, Steve Harmison, James Anderson

South Africa: Graeme Smith (capt), Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Mark Boucher (wk), Albie Morkel, Johan Botha, Andre Nel, Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini

"If you come back I'll take my hand off your pressure point..."

Kevin Pietersen will today begin his one-day leadership of the England side and his first big step has been to persuade his old mucker Steve Harmison to come out of one-day retirement.

Harmison returns after retiring in October 2006, with Ryan Sidebottom still suffering from a bad case of hip and groin-knack. Pietersen's new look attacking batting line-up should finally get the chance to actually bat, after their two games this week against Scotland and South Africa were abandoned because of rain. They began in Scotland, went down to Durham, and now find themselves in Leeds looking for better weather.

Owais Shah will be at three, Flintoff at five while Matt Prior is expected to open with Ian Bell. After an impressive display against Scotland, Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan could well keep his place despite Harmison's recall.

England (from): K Pietersen (capt), I Bell, M Prior (wkt), O Shah, A Flintoff, R Bopara, S Patel, L Wright, T Bresnan, S Broad, J Anderson, A Cook, G Swann, S Harmison.

South Africa (from): G Smith (capt), H Gibbs, J Kallis, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, M Boucher (wkt), V Philander, J Botha, M Morkel, D Steyn, M Ntini, H Amla, J Ontong.

Just incase you wondered why it was called the Riverside...

Yet more rain up North forces game off...

As we predicted on Monday yet more rain up North has resulted in England's Twenty20 match against South Africa at Durham's Riverside to be called off. It means England will go into the mega bucks Allen Stanford Twenty20 match against the West Indies in November without having played a competitive 20 overs match in five months.

The first One Day international against South Africa begins at Headingley on Friday, and we're not going to predict that to be a washout...

Jimmy didn't need told again where Long Off was...

One Day International. The Grange, Edinburgh.
Scotland v England. Match abandoned due to rain.

No that we should be surprised, but the One Day match between England and Scotland was washed out due to the Scottish rain which descended upon Edinburgh early in England's innings. Chasing a winning total of 157, England were forced to give it up when 10 for no wicket. Earlier, Flintoff's return to the One Dayers proved a successful one with three for 21 as Scotland were restricted to 157/9 in an innings reduced to 44 overs, with Gavin Hamilton top scoring ith 60.

Yes, that's the same Gavin Hamilton who got played one Test for England, got two pairs against South Africa, and never played again. Still, he did well this time, rescuing Scotland from a perilous position of 11/3 after Tim Bresnan, who also impressed with the ball, removed Coetzer and Poonia for ducks.

England play South Africa at The Riverside on Wednesday in a one-off Twenty20 match. What's the odds on getting rain up there too...
