"The best thing is we finished in time to catch the Hollyoaks Omnibus..."

More Bangladesh woe...

Bangladesh’s misery against South Africa this year continues after they were brushed aside in the opening one dayer in Chittagong.

Following a 2-0 Test series whitewash against the Proteas, Mohammed Ashraful’s side were hoping for more luck in the limited overs format, but struggled again as South Africa won by nine wickets with more than 13 overs to spare.

Bangladesh managed only 178 with the bat, Andre Nel the pick of the South African bowlers with three wickets for just 24 runs. Graeme Smith led the way in the run chase, hitting an unbeaten 103 from 118 balls alongside Herschelle Gibbs, who made 57 before being trapped leg before wicket to Shakib Al Hasan. The wicket only delayed the inevitavble however as Hashim Amla (nine not out) came in to finish off the job alongside his captain.

With the second of three one-dayers against South Africa beginning on Wednesday, on current form, Bangladesh might have to wait until they host Ireland the week after before they get to taste success again. And even then it won't be guaranteed...

At least Bangladesh aren't taking it lying down...

Bangladesh set for a hiding. Again

South Africa finished on 405 for 0 at stumps on the first day of the second test against Bangladesh, just nine runs short of the world record first wicket partnership.

Captain Graeme Smith finished the day on 223 alongside fellow opener Neil McKenzie who made 169 as Bangladesh’s attack struggled to make any inroads into the South African pair.

It means the previous world record of 412, set back in 1955 by Indian pairing Pankaj Roy and Vinoo Mankad against New Zealand,  is set to be smashed unless Bangladesh come up with an unlikely wicket. But it looks like it’s going to be a long five, probably four, days for the Bangladeshis, who are certain to face more calls for their test status to be revoked unless they can salvage an unlikely draw.

Ntini: Too fast...
After yet another predictable test loss to South Africa, Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons has claimed only a miracle can happen if his side are to square the two-match series. Which is an interesting way to go about restoring confidence in his team.

Following the five-wicket loss to South Africa this week, Siddons claimed his batsmen couldn’t handle the pace generated by Makhaya Ntini and co.

“They go from playing for their clubs in the National League to trying to take on the best fast bowler in the world. Dale Steyn ripped us apart in the second innings with 150 kph outswingers inswingers to the left-handers."

"When your batsmen are out of confidence and having to play against Steyn, Morne Morkel or Makhaya Ntini, that is a tough assignment. The pressure they transmitted is too much for our batsmen at the moment. Their bowlers were just too good for our batsmen."

We bet his batsmen can’t wait for the next test following those words of inspiration…

There may be many who argue that they should no longer be a test playing nation, following yet another sorry loss, this time to South Africa, but Bangladesh is a very young cricketing nation with great promise. Back in 1997, they won the ICC Champions Trophy in Malaysia allowing them to qualify for the World Cup in 1999, where they would go on to upset giants Pakistan. It may not have quite worked out since then, but the final over in their first Trophy win against Kenya in 1997 is always worth another look.
