Now be a good boy and go and fetch it...

And we celebrate London's role with a trio of anecdotes from cricket's annals. In 1973, Sir Garfield Sobers completed his 26th and final Test hundred at Lord's as his undefeated 150 set up an innings victory for a belligerent West Indies. Seven years later, night cricket came to England as the first floodlit match was held at Stamford Bridge, home to the rich boys at Chelsea FC, where Graham Gooch smashed 111* for Essex against the touring West Indies.

Elsewhere in 1456, the printing of the Gutenberg Bible was completed so all those boffins later in life could read it in Latin. Moving swiftly from the Bible to prayer, in 1662, an Act of Uniformity is passed requiring England to accept the Book of Common Prayer. And 'most importantly' Captain Mathew Webb inspiring many lunatics such as David Walliams by becoming the first person to swim the English Channel.

And it's Yom Huledet Same'ach! As they say in Hebrew to big-hitting South African Adrian Kuiper (49) French pioneer of electronic-synthpop Jean Michel Jarre (60), English comedian and actor Stephen Fry (51) and One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray (27)
