Struck twice in the final session as Sri Lanka finished a shortened first day of the third Test on 147-4.

The Durham bowler picked up the key wicket of Kumar Sangakkara for 46 after tea as the tourists battled back into a match they must win to square the series. He then dismissed Chamara Silva to follow on from his early scalp of Upul Tharanga to finish with 3-28 from 13 overs. Home skipper Mahela Jayawardene was unbeaten on 51 when bad light forced the players from the field after just 55 overs of play.

The start of the match had been delayed for two hours due to rain, but it was a minor miracle that any play was possible at all. Behind schedule due to the recent bad weather, the ground was only just ready in time to be officially reopened for its first Test since the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami devastated the area.

Preparation time for the pitch had also been curtailed by the heavy thunderstorms, so it was no surprise that England skipper Michael Vaughan opted to bowl first on a surface he described at the toss as 'tacky'.
